Top Albums of 2011: The DFW Edition

by admin

Despite having ties in London, Los Angeles and New York City, we call Dallas, Texas our home.  In the years that we’ve been based here, we’ve met a lot of great people that contribute to make the Dallas/Ft. Worth/Denton area a hotbed of great music.  In tribute to those great people and to this great city, we’ve asked a few music industry people here in Dallas to contribute their top ten albums of 2011.
Be sure to also check out our staff top 10 list and our musicians top ten list, which includes the selections of Peter Hook, The Joy Formidable, The Head and the Heart and Crocodiles among others.

John Iskander- Promoter- Parade of Flesh

There is no order to this, just an alphabetical “best of what I listened to the most this year”. Parade of Flesh even had the fine pleasure of bringing a few of these acts through Dallas this year: 400 Blows (twice), Cerebral Ballzy, Crystal Antlers (twice), Danny Brown and even Deafheaven (twice).

400 Blows – We Killed Like Champions (org)

Even with a new line-up and a 6-year hiatus their sound didn’t change, just got cleaner and meaner.

Bass Drum of Death- GB City (inflated/fat possum)

Debut album that complies their previous 7”s along with some new tunes… modern garage rock at it’s finest.

Cerebral Balzy- Cerebral Ballzy (volcom/adult swim)

What’s not to like about dirty and fast retro sk8 punk rock?  These dudes are the real deal; ask Sons of Hermann Hall, Double Wide and July Alley.

Crystal Antlers – Two-Way Mirror (self/recreation ltd.)

This is their third full length album and they just keep getting stronger… poppy psyche meets angry garage rock.

Danny Brown – XXX (fool’s gold)

If you don’t get laid after playing “I Will” for your special lady, then you probably don’t have a penis. He was even better live when opening for Das Racist at Sons of Hermann Hall in October. Download the whole thing for free: http://www.foolsgoldrecs.com/xxx/

Deafheaven – Roads to Judah (deathwish, inc)

A unique combination of screamo/hardcore washed down with melodic and beautifully epic black metal. The album features only four songs which span 38 minutes.

Disappears – Guider (kranky) & Live from Echo Canyon (self)

Chicago “super-group” unleashing kraut/shoegazer style rock that might make you feel ‘cool’ listening to it.

Drive- Soundtrack & Score (lakeshore)

The year of Ryan Gosling, right? I use the sexy and dramatic score by Cliff Martinez as bed music for my radio show, which airs every Thursday at 4PM Central on indie-verse.com and reairs at 10am.

Helms Alee – Weathered (hydra head)

Two girls, one guy and No Cup… just awesome stoner metal from the Pacific-Northwest.

Male Bonding – Endless Now (subpop)

Nineties alternative pop revival?

The Men – Leave Home (sacred bones?)

Self described, “post punk outfit”. I don’t care what they’re wearing as long as it sounds this raw and gritty.

Chris McDonald- Promotions at Granada Theatre

Ford & Lopatin- Channel Pressure

The Horrors- Skying

Girls- Father Son & Holy Ghost

Real Estate- Days

Korallreven- An Album by Korallreven

Shabazz Palaces- Black Up

The Vaccines- What Did You Expect From the Vaccines?

Big Troubles- Romantic Comedy

The War on Drugs- Slave Ambient

Holy Ghost!- Holy Ghost!

Brad Ehney- Creative Marketing Consultant at Social Media for the Masses

The Weeknd – House of Balloons

Active Child – You Are All I See

Zola Jesus – Concatus

Lykke Li – Wounded Rhymes

The Antlers – Burst Apart

Cults – Cults

Tennis – Cape Dory

Akron / Family – S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT

Hunx and His Punx – Too Young To Be In Love

Scattered Trees – Sympathy

3- Astronautalis- Dimitri Mendeleev

4- The Middle East- Months

5- Bon Iver- Calgary

6- The Decemberists- This is Why We Fight

7- Fleet Foxes- Bedouin Dress

8- Hayes Carll- KMAG YOYO

9- Wilco- One Sunday Morning

10- Guy Clark Jr.- Bright Lights

Max Tannone: The Mos Dub project

by admin

In the wrong hands, a mash-up is a trite, unimaginative attempt to create poorly designed art. And then there’s Max Tannone. His work as the mastermind behind the acclaimed Jaydiohead project drew the attention of Jay-Z (!) and the Beastie Boys. He followed that up by working with the Beasties for the “Doublecheck Your Head” remix. Now he has released another great mash-up, combining the work of Mos Def with great Jamaican dub music. We interviewed Max in April of 2009 to discuss his work on Jaydiohead and thought this was a perfect time to touch base to have him explain his great new project. You must listen to this, to appreciate what a great concept this is. Listen, learn, enjoy…..

Check Your Head

by admin

Breaking News!  Just got a note from Max (Jaydiohead) Tannone, who wanted to clue us in on the identity of his super secret new project.  He’s produced a series of mash-ups for the Beastie Boys!  Working with the band on the project, this one is available on the Beasties site here.  Click on “News” and you’ll be able to listen to his mashup of “3′s What’Cha Want”.  Nothing better than seeing someone that we enjoy get to move on to bigger and better things.  Great job, Max!

As more tracks become available and with the Beasties permission, we’ll post more here…

Blagojevich and Coldplay get "served"

by admin

Look, I love Rachel Maddow, but why did we have to wait until now for someone to do a good interview of Blagojevich?  I love that Blagojevich gets more laughs when he’s being serious than Letterman gets when he’s joking.  Nonetheless, Letterman is great here because he says what everyone has been thinking.

We’ve discussed the “suckiness” of Coldplay before.  So, we’re thrilled to here that they’re going to get served this weekend (via Huffington Post )which has a great side by side video to boot!).  Can the person in charge of this please wait and see if they win an award at the Grammy’s.  I would pay money to watch them get served on live television while excepting a Grammy for their crap album.  I remember being outraged when the Stones sued The Verve for ripping off a riff.  But I going to be a hypocrit and say that I hope Coldplay makes Joe Satriani a very rich man.  Number of Satriani albums in my collection? Zero.

Rush Limbaugh has a job, but Steve Jones is unemployed (via LA Times)?  Outfreakingrageous!

If your a fan of Paul’s Boutique, you need to read this (via Pitchfork).  Why are the Beasties the first band to figure out a way to fight piracy?  They may be my poster child for the fight against TDOA.
